Nickel Prices Continue to Drop |

Nickel has dropped nearly $10.00 a pound in the last two months, closing at $33,400 a tonne, with a per pound price of $15.15 on July 12, 2007 at the LME.
The trend over the last month has seen nickel close out at a dollar per pound less each week, but now may have reached its floor. An article on Forbes.com states that Calyon has amended it's 2008 nickel price forecast to an average of $34,380 per tonne, or $15.59 per pound. At this level, nickel will level out at late 2006 prices.
What's behind the drop?
The combination of record high nickel prices and stocks down to two days worth of consumption led to what you could basically call a world-wide freak out. This, of course, led to a scramble for any means of correction.
The LME changed it's trading rules on nickel to favor the market, stainless steel producers began using less nickel in their product, or, in the case of Chinese producers, using nickel pig iron rather than refined nickel. Combine this with a drop in US demand (due to the plunging housing market), a Chinese attempt to keep steel prices level in China by colluding to cut production and drop export prices, and the resulting surpluses of stainless steel in other markets--and there you have it, a market correction.

Scams Becoming More Common in Metal Industry |
Monday, 02 July 2007 |
Avoid being a victim of con artists.
High metal prices, digital technology, and a lack of vigilence on the part of scrap dealers have contributed to an increasing proliferation of internet and phone scams targeting metal suppliers.
Add to that a conviction rate hovering around 1%, and you can see we have a serious threat to our industry.
The cons fall into two basic categories: mail forwarding and false shipment addresses.

Metals and Alloy Encyclopedia |
Tuesday, 19 June 2007 |
M. Vincent and Associates has added a metals, alloys, and metal working encyclopedia as a sub-section of our site.
The encyclopedia uses the same wiki soffware used by wikipedia, and is very easy to register for and learn how to use. There are links to help pages throughout the site, so anyone that has an interest in metals, metal working, or associated industries can quickly add or change information, pages, and whole sections as they see fit.
This encyclopedia is meant to be open to all, and it is our hope that people within the metals, chemical, aerospace, medical, and engineering communities will come together and make this a resource that is helpful to all.
You can access the encyclopedia from our navigation menu under "site tools", or through this link: Metals Encyclopedia.
