Nickel continues to top record prices daily this week, as
speculation that stainless steel supplies will fail to meet demand
drives prices up.
As reported on Bloomberg.com, nickel inventories have fallen
to below two days of global consumption. As Chinese production of
stainless steel grows, stockpiles have fallen 45%.

PolyMet to Mine Copper, Nickel on Minnesota's Iron Range |
|
|
|
|
Wednesday, 08 November 2006 |
|
PolyMet Mining Corp. of Vancouver has announced plans to convert the long-closed LTV taconite plant of Northeastern Minnesota's Iron Range into a copper, nickel, and precious metals mine.
LTV will be a part of PolyMet's NorthMet Project. Located in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, LTV's buildings sit 8 miles west of NorthMet's base outside of Babbitt.
What makes this project so unique and exciting on the Iron Range is that instead of relying on taconite production, LTV will be the first nickel plant in the USA, and the only copper plant in Minnesota.
If PolyMet can prove that it's improved processing methods are efficient enough to overcome the higher cost of mining the Iron Range and can remain viable in the long term as the price of copper and nickel fluctuates this could really be a shot in the arm for the long-depressed area.
